FOUR STARS
"A HIT. Gatto is brilliant; Kogut is extraordinary."
Ted Hadley, The Buffalo News

By turns sexy, funny, spooky, and unsettling, VENUS IN FUR explores the power relations between a playwright and a mysterious actress who seems to have an uncanny
familiarity with his source material, the scandalous,
erotic novel Venus in Furs.

The New Phoenix Theatre began its applications for rights to VENUS IN FUR when the show first opened off-Broadway, at the Manhattan Theatre Club, in 2010. As that production was repeatedly extended, rights were put on hold, and the New Phoenix had to wait further while the play enjoyed its subsequent transfer to Broadway and critical and box office success. “We were pretty tenacious, but the WNY Premiere is still a coup for us,” says Robert Waterhouse, the New Phoenix Theatre’s artistic director. “The play is sexy, spooky and very funny, but ultimately succeeds as a brilliant exploration of gender and power that keeps its audiences guessing.”

The New York Times described VENUS IN FUR as “ninety minutes of good, kinky fun,” while The New Yorker added that the play is “genuinely funny.” Nina Arianna subsequently won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Wanda, the actress who, Thomas discovers, has a particular insight into the role.
