FOUR STARS
"Terrific!" - Ted Hadley, The Buffalo News

"The current production of Bounty: the Mutiny… confirms,
as if there were any doubt, that the deep thrust of
the New Phoenix performance space is one of
the most dynamic and exciting in town.
I found Bounty to be sheer theatrical delight."
- Anthony Chase, Artvoice

"Waterhouse builds a creative palate of storytelling techniques, including shadow puppetry and fluid staging, to capture the wonder and peril of sea adventure. This palate also has the effect of providing the performance with a widely varied and immensely satisfying texture that stands out among Buffalo theatre... History or not, where honest art is made, truth
is found, and such is the case with this production."
- Marisa Caruso, NY Theatre Guide

The ship HMS Bounty left for Tahiti on Christmas Eve, 1787, and never returned. The New Phoenix Theatre explored the famous mutiny, which had at its core the collision between Captain Bligh, Fletcher Christian, and a crew sated by the exotic trappings of Tahiti, in BOUNTY, a new, company developed version featuring an ensemble under the direction of Robert Waterhouse.

Subtitled BOUNTY: The Mutiny, as Recreated by Sailors on Pitcairn’s Island, the show imagined the famous story retold by the mutiny’s survivors – and the dead. The show features actor-writers Christian Brandjes, Chris Kelly, New Phoenix Theatre Founder Richard Lambert, Adam Yellen, Geoff Pictor, J.F.Kennedy, Zoe Appler, Alphonso Walker and Geoffrey Devereux -- and puppets by Michele Costa -- in a world premiere developed out of workshops with the company. The set, which converted the New Phoenix into an (18th century sailing vessel, is by Michael Lodick.
