WELCOME TO OUR 22nd ANNIVERSARY SEASON

phoenix signFor 22 years, we at the New Phoenix Theatre on the Park have presented our unique brand of fresh, intimate and interdisciplinary theater. Some seasons we played to standing room only houses. Other seasons, there was more room to, ahem, spread out. It was a very different landscape those decades ago. In the recent years, the Buffalo Theatre scene has continued to explode! Fantastic new companies have made their mark here in the city and beyond, creating fresh identities and establishing their own niche and audiences.

Our beloved theaters here in western New York have been, to a great extent, at least partially responsible for the current citywide Buffalo boom. They, our new and established theater companies, will continue to lead the next chapter of our collective renaissance. We are proud to have been here in the darker, earlier years. It was a struggle but 22 years later, here we are, asking for your attention, affection and attendance. We are excited to be part of the next phase of Buffalo's bright future. There have been many, many actors, directors and designers who have created bright and respected theater careers for themselves by beginning at our humble theater. Many theater companies have also spent their time in residence at the Phoenix, prior to their breaking through into other independent successes. We cheer and applaud each and every one of these artists.

This season, we remain as excited as we were all those years ago, when our handsome home was not yet a theatre, but an abandoned soup kitchen, waiting for a little attention. It is with a renewed commitment to presenting the finest theater possible that we plan for this season, perhaps our finest to date. We did it for you 22 years ago. We want to remain in your hearts as a place to celebrate the community of theatre here in Buffalo. Thank you for being here with us after all these years, and with your help, we will still be here next season, and the season after that…

We want to surprise you. We want to entertain you.
We want to move you with our renewed energy and potential.

Welcome back.
We're so glad you're here.

theater exterior“The building which houses the dynamic New Phoenix Theatre company was built in 1884, which makes it the oldest theatre structure in Buffalo. The building at 95 Johnson Park had served functions from  soup kitchen to lecture hall before it was abandoned and ultimately rescued by Richard Lambert, NP’s executive director. Though the building has gotten a much needed facelift, going to the New Phoenix still feels a bit like time travel, [given] the atmosphere, augmented by the autographed actor photos that line the walls and the new Keith Waterhouse Memorial Bar, modeled after the famed Blue Bar in Manhattan’s Algonquin Hotel. You never know what magic you’ll see — but with this kind of backdrop, the stage has been set even before the actors appear.”
